Oh my gosh... do you remember the bus ride?! Can you even believe "so and so" was so drunk they tried to light up/pee/barf in their back pack and we weren't even halfway there? "so and so" sooo cannot hold their liquor (which you than mentally noted so next year you could be prepared to either feed them fake shots/NA beer so they can actually make it downtown - only to pull the same nonsense on the rapid transit - some people just never learn).
I have so many years of memories of St. Patrick's Day past... and even though the days and locations may have changed, every year, it has been the same thing. You know my motto "There's nothing better than day drinking!" So for me, the earlier, the better. (There's a reason I enjoy tailgating so much.... see the connection here?). St. Patrick's Day is a tradition that started well before high school for me and my friends. We learned the ropes, and we have seen our share of bus rides and parades.
A few years back, I went to my last parade - it was a Tuesday that year, and we did it up just as we always have in years past. As we sat on the bus (which was at a complete unscheduled stop due to the high schoolers who decided to spark a doobie in the back of the bus - silly high schoolers - they probably has no one to show them the ropes...) bestie and I looked at one another, sighed, and tried to chug the rest of our "Gatorade" to make the ride a tad more bearable.
Once we arrived at the parade - it became clear to us that this would be the last parade for a long while. The amount of crowds just trying to walk along the parade route was absolutely insane. I felt as though I was being pushed through the crowd involuntarily, and had I have fell down - I would not be here typing this post, as I truly think I would have been trampled to death by the crowd. Anyhow.... this was my last parade.
The past few years, on March 17th, I have kept the same routine - minus the bus and downtown. Although in my older years, we have pushed our start to around 9am (I needs my sleep!) and kept it local. I have had my share of memory making over the years. I still love this day just as much as I ever have.... but this year, I needed to do something different. This is the first year I am not starting my day cracking a cold one. This year, I am starting my day ...
...with a run... What? Yes, a run. The Super Strongsville 5k.
I am not sure if this is a sign of me getting older (HA!), more mature (HA!) or just needing a rational way to pace myself for the day ahead (most realistic!) - but either way, come tomorrow morn' at 9:00am, I will be stepping off (with my very reluctant.but I love her.cousin) on my first St. Patrick's Day race. I am considering it a fun run, as I normally don't run with someone - and my shins have been giving me an ass-ache lately - so no pressure. But I do want to run atleast 80%. Rumor has it there is a killer hill at the 1.5 mile marker. Game plan is to run until the hill, and take it step by step from that point on. Can't wait to show you my outfit (a couple custom items from a couple great companies I found online - I'll spread some link love soon!). Wow, so that's that.
And for those reading who may be thinking I lost my mojo - stop right there! B'cause you can bet your green-everyone's Irish on March 17th-ass that I'll still be packing up my back pack and heading out after my run. After all, what better way to celebrate another run in the books than
Happy St. Patrick's Day! Have fun, and be safe!
Slainte!
