...The first time my doctor acknowledged my weight gain. It was not one of my proudest moments... quite embarrassing actually. It was 2003, early in the year. About one and a half years after I began dating John starting my first "real" job. I knew I had put on some weight, but no one really ever told me - so I thought perhaps it was in my head (nevermind the fact that my pants and shirts started getting tighter and shorter...hmph!).
As I sat on the table, doc came in and looked over my chart. "I see you gained some weight..." "Yep.... I guess so." He continued "Didn't you just start a job in an office?" Another "Yep." "Well, we see this alot, now that you are sitting for about 8 hours a day, you need to be sure to get up and move around to offset some of this gain." Apparently, that last part was too much for me to comprehend over the course of the next almost 7 years.
I knew I had hit a high when my allergist marched a fat ceramic pig across his desk as I sat there watching. I knew it was time to change something, and I tried. Sure, I tried stuff... exercise, swimming, walking, weights, etc. But I always went at it gung ho, and needless to say, these efforts didn't last more than a week or so. Until now... Thankfully, we are all in this together, and it has been a great support.
Take a look at the links above - this is nothing ground breaking, or new - this is common sense. If your sitting for 8 hours a day at work, that is 8 hours a day you are no longer moving around, and burning calories. So get up, take a quick walk around the block. Use your lunch hour to move around, do some lunges (and I HATE lunges!), stretch... Something. Just do something to help prevent the initial gain. I am proof that it will creep up on ya, and it is MUCH harder to get off than it is to put on, so try to incorporate something in your day now.
Avoiding the vending machines can be a big help too! But that is for another post!
Do you have any ideas for a quick workout move, or exercise that can be done at work, in your office, or on lunch?
