My "Fix-It" Concoction

In an effort to rid myself of this nasty 'bug' that has been laying dormant inside me for the past week and a half, I decided to tackle it head on... A mucus exorcism if you will...

My husband thinks I have completely lost my mind, but I have to say that I have noticed a difference in how I feel! Can I say the dormant 'bug' will not creep up in the next day or week or so, No - but for now, it is holding it off, even if I do smell like regurgitated garlic.

Without any futhur ado...

(*please note that this is in NO way scientific, and I am NOT a doctor - so please discuss with your doc before trying!)

You should begin and end each day with a cycle of vitamins to boost your immune system. I am using a Daily Vitamin, Energy Vitamin, Native Woman, Flax Seed Oil, and Vitamin C. I split the does up, so I am taking some at night, some when I wake up - of course, following all directions on the package.

Day 1 - when you begin to feel sluggish, and a little clouded...
Vitamins
Glass of Orange Juice

Make a pot of Garlic Soup:
(*soup has been adapted below to include the items I had, and what I had time for)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
  • 2 1/4 cups sliced onions
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 44 garlic cloves, peeled
  • 3 1/2 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt chicken broth
  • 2 cups White wine
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream or creamer
  • 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (about 2 ounces)
Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat.
Add onions and thyme and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes.
Add 44 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes.
Add chicken stock and wine;
cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 25-30 minutes.
Using an immersion hand mixer, purée soup until smooth.
Add cream and bring to simmer.
Season with salt and pepper.
(Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.)

Eat a big bowl for lunch/dinner with plenty of water to drink. (This should be eaten with dinner as well, saving enough for lunch the next day).

Before heading to bed, be sure to give the sinuses a good cleansing with the old Neti Pot.

Go to sleep in long pants, long sleeve T-shirt (and sweatshirt) to sweat it out.
(*be sure to warn your partner, as you will now stink to high heaven of garlic!, and once you start sweating, it will ooze out of your pores as well!)

Day 2 - Still a bit stuffy, but not as groggy as Day 1...
Vitamins
Glass of Orange Juice

Eat your leftover Garlic Soup for lunch with plenty of water throughout the day.

For dinner, boil up some noodles with the semi-homemade sauce below:
Spaghetti Sauce
10 cloves of fresh garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp brown sugar
2-4 cups of pre-made spaghetti sauce

chop up the fresh garlic cloves
add to the olive oil in sauce pan, saute up the garlic until browned
add the spaghetti sauce - stir often
add brown sugar - once dissolved, let simmer for 6 minutes

Serve over boiled noodles with a side of garlic bread for sopping up leftover sauce.

Drink lots of water!

Day 3 - Still holding out...
Vitamins
Orange Juice

Plenty of Water!

Eat the leftover pasta for lunch with some garlic bread to sop up any more sauce leftover.

This is the last day for the garlic saturation, and to keep it fresh, you can use a number of options for dinner - just be sure to include atleast 10 fresh garlic cloves. A few options would be:
*Saute garlic with gravy for roast beef
*saute garlic until soft and browned and add to a salad
*make a garlic butter and white wine cream sauce for chicken or pasta

just be sure to eat it and drink plenty of water!

For an added bonus - make enough dinner to use for lunch the next day...

Before heading to bed, be sure to give the sinuses a good cleansing with the old Neti Pot.

Go to sleep in long pants, long sleeve T-shirt (and sweatshirt) to sweat it out.

start sweating, it will ooze out of your pores as well!)

A few things to keep in mind when trying out my home-made concoction:
  • You will stink of garlic for alteast three days - and when I say stink, i mean it will be coming out of places you didn't know you had, so you may want to try this over a weekend when you will not be at work (I know, you cannot plan when you get sick! - it is just a suggestion).
  • Get plenty of water, and plenty of rest. I try to get atleast 4 refills out of my water bottle before bed (approx. 70 fl. oz per day). With rest, NO LESS than 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • I am only on day 3 - and so far so good. I plan on sticking with the extra vitamins for the next 3-4 days, and a mild garlic saturation for the next 2 days. I will update as I go along...
  • Again, your significant other will probably think you have jumped off the deep end, or are taking it too far, as mine does - but I think he just does not like the smell of garlic! ;-)
Good luck, and stay healthy!
